Celebrating Our Dental Hygienists: October Is for You!

October is a special month — it’s National Dental Hygiene Month! This is a time when we pause and say thank you to our amazing dental hygienists who bring care, kindness, and expertise to every patient visit.

At FDA, our hygienists do so much more than “just clean teeth.” They help us stay healthy, confident, and comfortable. They teach, listen, and support. This post is for them — and for you, our patients — because caring for your smile is a team effort.

What Is National Dental Hygiene Month?

  • Every October, the dental world turns the spotlight on oral health, prevention, and the people behind the scenes — dental hygienists.
  • The month is about raising awareness: better brushing, smarter habits, and the importance of routine care.
  • It’s also about saying thanks. Hygienists often quietly carry out big work — and this month helps us celebrate them.

Why Dental Hygienists Matter

Here are some of the big ways hygienists make a difference:

  • They remove plaque and tartar that your toothbrush and floss can’t reach.
  • They screen for gum disease, cavities, and sometimes even signs of oral cancer.
  • They teach good habits — how to brush, floss, and care for your gums at home.
  • They’re part of the bigger health picture: good oral health is linked to things like heart health, diabetes, and respiratory wellness.
  • They build trust. When a patient feels heard, safe, and cared for, prevention becomes easier.

Small Ways You Can Help Celebrate This Month

Let’s make this October extra special for our hygienists — and for your own oral health. Here are some ideas:

  1. Say “thank you.” Write a note, leave a card, or say something kind when you see your hygienist.
  2. Refer a friend or family member. Sharing oral health awareness helps more people benefit.
  3. Stick with the “Daily Four” (or your favorite habit set):
    • Brush twice a day (for two full minutes)
    • Floss daily
    • Rinse with fluoride or antimicrobial mouthwash
    • Chew sugar-free gum (if recommended)

These habits make your hygienist’s job easier and keep your smile strong.

4.  Ask questions. Curious about an instrument or a new product? Hygienists love to teach.

To our FDA hygienists: Thank You. Thank you for your steady hands, warm hearts, and clear explanations. Thank you for catching trouble early, for coaching good habits, and for helping patients feel safe. Let’s make this October not just about awareness — let’s make it about appreciation.

They are all committed to putting their patients’ comfort first and they love educating others about creating a personalized oral health routine. To help you get to know our rockstar hygienists a little better, they each share what they love about their work:

Alex

“Helping patients feel confident about their smile is such a rewarding experience!  I love motivating patients to keep up with their oral care. Also, my goal is always to help patients feel relaxed at their appointment…I want patients to enjoy their visits here at FDA.”

Diann

“I love the enthusiasm created by the whole team learning together. We can branch off and learn about other things and then come back and share. Since we think of things in the long term, I’ve learned that listening today will help tomorrow.”

Erin

“FDA takes the time to get to know patients to create individual treatment plans based on their needs and wants. I love educating my patients about the new developments in dentistry.”

Jean

“The teamwork at FDA is unmatched. Helping hands are everywhere. The dental care is modern, conservative, and thorough; and it’s what I want for my own family.”

Kelly

We go above and beyond for our patients. In fact, I’ve built up a clientele that I’ve seen for so long, I just can’t wait to catch up with them during their next visit.”

Lydianne

“I especially enjoy working with patients who have dental anxiety. Meeting them where they are, addressing their concerns, and identifying what I can do to make them more comfortable is my favorite part of the job.”
