September is here which means back-to-school and back to our routines. As you get back into the swing of things, don’t forget about your teeth!  Your daily oral health routine is important for not just your mouth, but your overall health as well.  We’re here to help with our top three tips to achieve better oral health!  

HOW TO KEEP YOUR SMILE IN SHAPE

 

1. Have a Consistent Oral Routine. 
  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste (remember to change the toothbrush, every 3 months!).
  • Clean between your teeth (you can use floss, a flossing device, or an interdental brush, whatever is more comfortable for you!).
  • Scrape your tongue.
2. Eat a Healthy Diet.
  • Focus on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. They are packed with the nutrients your body needs to be up and running, and they help support oral health, too!
  • Limit foods high in sugar, such as processed foods. This includes alcohol! Sugar causes cavities.
  • Stop smoking or using any tobacco products. Not only does smoking stain your teeth, but it can also cause gum disease and cancer in the long term.
3. Visit Dr. Brunacini or Dr. Karagiorgos for Regular Check-Ups.
  • The best way to fix dental issues is to detect them as early as possible. Visiting us will prevent dental issues from going unnoticed or getting worse.

Having a good oral health routine can be as easy as 1,2,3!  Consistency is key when it comes to establishing new habits, so stick with it. National Smile Day: 5 Easy Ways to Take Care of Your Smile

 

Here’s a reason to smile…  National Smile Day is May 31! National Smile Day was founded by two family dentists in Illinois to celebrate the power of a smile and draw attention to the importance of good dental health and hygiene. This is our kind of national celebration!  At FDA, we love helping our patients achieve healthy and beautiful smiles.  Here are 5 easy tips to take care of your smile on National Smile Day and every day! 

1. Don’t rush the brush

Although it might seem like the most basic of dental tips, brushing at least twice a day is just the beginning. Brush your teeth for a minimum of 2-3 minutes each time in a gentle, circular motion with an ADA-approved toothpaste.  Use a soft or extra-soft toothbrush and replace it every 3-4 months. Don’t hesitate to ask our caring team of hygienists to give you a refresher on brushing basics at your next appointment!

2. Floss like a boss

Flossing is just as important as brushing, as bacteria is most likely to form in between the teeth, which can lead to tooth decay. The ADA recommends flossing one time per day. If using traditional string floss is difficult for you to maneuver, try using a water flosser instead. 

3. Rinse and repeat

After you’ve flossed and brushed, we recommend that you use an alcohol-free mouthwash to rinse away any remaining bacteria and plaque. Even if you don’t have mouthwash on hand, swishing with water is still better than nothing at all. 

4. Take care of your teeth from the inside out

A diet rich in calcium, along with lots of fruits and vegetables, is good for your oral health!  Eating foods that are full of essential vitamins and minerals can help to reduce inflammation and support healthy teeth and gums.

5. Schedule regular check ups with our team of compassionate dental professionals

5 Signs You Need to Make a Dental Appointment

The sign in our office is true: “Those teeth aren’t going to brush themselves.”  Your teeth need you to brush and floss daily, and they need you to get regular check-ups with Dr. Brunacini or Dr. Karagiorgos.  However, 100 million Americans fail to see a dentist each year. Whether it’s a busy schedule, dental anxiety, or lack of insurance, professional oral health care should not be avoided.  Seeing a dentist regularly is a great way to support your oral health and can help prevent small issues from becoming big dental problems. By catching problems early on, you can save yourself time, money, and pain.  Here are five signs it’s time to make an appointment with us:

You have pain.

A toothache is the classic reason to come to our office and should not be ignored.  There are many possible causes for a toothache such as a cavity or broken tooth. Either way, a toothache should be evaluated by Dr. Brunacini or Dr. Karagiorgos right away to determine the cause and prevent the tooth from dying.  Jaw pain can also be a sign of a dental issue such as bruxism or teeth grinding.  Whatever pain you’re experiencing in your mouth, Dr. Brunacini or Dr. Karagiorgos can diagnose and address the issue, as well as help you avoid future issues.  

You try to hide your smile.

What if you could have the smile of your dreams in just one or two dental visits?  If you’re self-conscious about your smile, it can affect your confidence and prevent you from living your life to the fullest.  Whether you’re missing a tooth or wish your teeth were whiter, many dental issues can be corrected through cosmetic dentistry. You notice blood when you brush or floss.

There are several reasons for bleeding gums, one of them being gingivitis, an early stage of periodontal disease.  If your gums bleed easily, it’s time to talk with Dr. Brunacini or Dr. Karagiorgos. Gingivitis is reversible and preventable and we can help you get on the right path to better oral health.  Bleeding and swollen gums could also be a sign that something else is wrong, another important reason to involve us in your health care.

You’re pregnant.

Coming in for a check-up should be on every mom-to-be’s checklist.  As we’ve said before, oral health is directly related to overall health, and regular dental check-ups and a good oral health routine will help keep you and baby healthy.  Pregnancy hormones can also cause changes in your mouth. For example, many women develop pregnancy gingivitis, or swollen gums, which can be helped with extra dental cleanings.  Some women also develop overgrowths in their mouth called “pregnancy tumors,” which can be uncomfortable. Mostly, these growths go away on their own, but if you have discomfort or concerns, come in and see us.

It’s time for a check-up.

If it’s been over 6 months since you last visited, then it’s time to come in for a cleaning and exam.  Even if you don’t have any symptoms, regular dental check-ups can help prevent problems from developing and treat symptoms (like those in the list above) before they advance.  Regular visits to our office are just as important as brushing and flossing your teeth daily.
